Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog is a community for pet owners who are the caretakers of a paralyzed dog or cat. We offer tips, support, news and where to find products for the daily care of pets with paralysis and other neurological conditions.
The website is dedicated to my dog Sophie and the lessons I learned after she became paralyzed. As an animal advocate writer and co-founder of the Heaven Can Wait Animal Society I thought I understood the needs of pets, until Sophie got sick. Her illness turned my family’s life upside down and changed the way we lived.
This blog shares our journey. It is a place for ALL handicapped, paraplegic and special needs pets. We share health updates, daily living tips, resources for supportive equipment, like wheelchairs and the latest veterinary research and clinical trials.
Sophie was the fastest runner at the dog park. Running was her greatest pleasure. In 2008, she was stricken with a progressive paralysis that took away her ability to run, walk and later stand or even sit on her own. For the next five years she bravely learned to enjoy a new way of life.
This blog is not sad. Many of the lessons my family learned on our journey with Sophie were pretty funny. I hope you will read along with Lessons and share your story about caring for a disabled pet.
