Kimberley O’Hare is a real estate agent who is passionate about Big Dogs. She recently launched a website called Rentals For Big Dogs as a personal mission to keep large dogs out of animal shelters by helping their owners find rental properties that accept big dogs. She is now adding a second layer to this goal with the development of two apps that will link pet owners directly to Big Dog friendly properties.
6 – 8 million stray and unwanted animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year. The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy found the top two reasons owners surrender their pets are: moving and landlords not allowing a pet.
Kimberley saw that big dogs are particularly discriminated by landlords because they are afraid of high insurance premiums, potential bites and the destruction of property. She hopes Rentals For Big Dogs will eventually open the doors of communication between property owners and tenants and show that for the most part, owners of large dogs are responsible.
To solve the immediate problem, Kimberley is working on two special apps that pet owners can download to their cell phones when they are searching for homes or apartments to rent.
“It’s really difficult now searching for pet friendly rentals,” said Kimberley. “It’s time consuming and frustrating. These apps will be instant and get families into rental properties quicker.”
“Every family we are able to help find a home means one less dog that goes into a shelter.”
