PetSmart® is proving how much they love pets. In celebration of their 30th anniversary, PetSmart launched the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program. For every bag of dog or cat food purchased, the retailer will donate a meal to a pet in need. The company expects to donate more than 60 million meals to pet shelters, animal welfare organizations and food banks during 2017.
Here is how the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program works
When you purchase a bag of pet food online or at any of its 1,500-plus stores across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, PetSmart will donate a meal to a dog or cat being served by a pet shelter, animal welfare organization and food bank. This is the biggest philanthropic campaign in PetSmart’s 30-year history. The program will run March 1 – December 31, 2017.
“At PetSmart we love pets and we believe they make us better people. To celebrate our 30 years of continued commitment to helping pets in need every day and as a trusted partner to pet parents everywhere, we want to celebrate by giving back even more,” said Eran Cohen, chief customer experience officer, PetSmart. “Throughout 2017, every time pet parents purchase any bag of dog or cat food in our stores or online, they can rest assured they are also helping feed pets in need. When their pets eat, pets in need eat, too. It’s that simple.”
According to David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities, up to 7 million pets enter shelters every year across North America. While these dogs and cats wait for their forever homes, they need access to pet food, making it a significant operating expense for animal welfare organizations. Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ will greatly relieve this burden.
PetSmart Charities® will be in charge of distributing the food
Nonprofit partner PetSmart Charities® will distribute the food to dogs and cats living in pet shelters, animal welfare organizations and those served by food banks. The nonprofit partner of PetSmart serves 1,800 animal welfare groups. PetSmart Charities is a leader in pet adoption, saving more than 7.3 million pets’ lives. The organization has donated $300 million to date to help homeless dogs and cats.

My personal endorsement
I have been involved in animal rescue for a long time. PetSmart has always been there for rescue groups by letting us house pets at their store free-of-charge and run weekly adoptions. In addition, PetSmart Charities has donated tens of thousands of dollars to subsidize my group’s spay/neuter clinic for low-income pet owners.
