Suzanne DeBrango is the writer behind the popular blog, apuginthekitchen. She is also the guardian to two adorable rescue Pugs named Nando, Izzy (pictured above with their BFF Daisey.) When her two fur-kids were diagnosed with life-threatening health issues, Suzanne didn’t throw in the towel. Instead, she dedicates much of her daily activities to keeping them safe and as healthy as can be. Here is their story:
“I am Mom to two special needs senior pugs. Nando, who is 13 years-old, was rescued by Pug Rescue of Long Island when he was a young puppy. I was blessed to have Nando join my family only a few short days after his rescue.
I already had Izzy and wanted a friend for her. The two dogs instantly loved each other and have been inseparable. Izzy is nearly 13 years-old, so both dogs are close in age.
Nando was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of eight. Our veterinarian said it was the most severe case he had ever encountered. Nando went blind only two short months after he was diagnosed.
With a lot of work and care and love from both me and Izzy, Nando defied the odds and is still with us. It took over a year to regulate his blood sugar levels. He is amazing and has adapted so well to his loss of sight.
Last year Izzy was also diagnosed with diabetes and like many brachycephalic dogs (dogs with short snouts) she has also developed respiratory problems, including a collapsed trachea.
I follow a very strict regimen of holistic medications for both dogs, along with insulin every day. I am thankful for every day I have with them.”
