This Wordless Wednesday I want to share a story that is truly a tribute to the human-animal bond. The story starts in South Korea where a litter of puppies were born close to New Year’s Eve 2014. Soon after the unthinkable happened when the littermates became victims of a deliberate fire. Only one of the puppies, named Journey, survived the ordeal but she was badly burned on her front paws.
That’s when animal rescuer Marilyn Hendrickson from Kirkland, Washington heard about Journey. She contacted a cat rescue group called MEOW Cat Rescue and they paid for her to travel to South Korea to save the puppy.
When Marilyn and Journey met for the first time, it was love at first sight for both of them. Journey licked Marilyn’s face and couldn’t stop wagging her tail.
It was Marilyn’s plan to bring Journey to the U.S. and become her foster mother until she was healed and ready to be adopted, but if you are a pet lover you can guess how that plan turned out. Journey was adopted by Marilyn and has become a full member of the family.
Journey’s injuries made it hard for her to walk so her new mom tried padded boots to cushion the puppy’s tender paws, but it wasn’t a perfect solution. Journey needed custom braces that cost $2,000.
The cost was prohibitive for Marilyn’s family so she reached out to her local community for help. People rallied to aid Journey and the money was raised in less than two weeks.
Plaster molds were taken of Journey’s front paws and sent to OrthoPets so a pair of personalized prosthetic legs could be made. Last month the puppy received her custom braces and the transformation is incredible. You should see her run!
Here’s a video of Journey putting on her new braces.
Here is Journey running like the wind!
