Do paralyzed dogs have special nutritional needs? Are there supplements incontinent dogs should take to prevent urinary tract infections? What foods will keep my paralyzed dog as healthy as possible? I used to think about these questions a lot when Sophie was sick. It wasn’t because I didn’t have faith in my veterinarian; it’s that I’ve always been interested in good nutrition for my human family and my canine kids. Healthy eating has been a kind of hobby since I became a vegetarian in 1993.
My veterinarian did his best to address my questions, but he based his answers on the dietary requirements for a healthy dog. He didn’t have any data on the special needs of dogs with disabilities.
Since I started Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog I realized I am not alone in trying to find answers about good nutrition for dogs with paralysis and neurological conditions because pet parents send me questions on the subject all the time.
Then a few weeks ago the Petcurean Pet Nutrition company reached out to the blogging community with an offer for their senior nutritionist to answer questions about a healthy diet for dogs.
