When I saw Sport sleeping so soundly on this stack of towels I had to caption the picture: The Prince And The Pea.
Remember the fairytale written by Hans Christian Andersen titled, The Princess and The Pea? Sport’s peaceful sleep high on the stack of towels immediately took me back to this childhood story about the prince who travelled the world to find a true princess. And how he came home very sad after each candidate proved to be a fake.
The fairytale goes on to say that one night during a terrible storm, the King, Queen and Prince heard a knock at their door. Outside was a beautiful girl drenched from the rain. The family invited her in and offered her a place to sleep for the night. She told them she was a princess who had gotten lost.
The Queen was skeptical at this claim and decided to set up a test. She laid a single pea on the bed where the girl was to sleep and then piled 20 feather mattresses on top. The Queen believed that a true princess would have skin so delicate that she would feel the pea under all of the mattresses.
The next morning the family rushed to the girl’s side and asked how she had slept. “Oh terribly bad,” replied the Princess. “Heaven knows what was in the bed.”
The Prince was so happy he took the girl to be his wife and they lived happily ever after.
– Of course that story would never fly in today’s world, but it’s kind of nice to know that once upon a time Hans Christian Andersen decided to share his view of romance with the world and the world loved hearing it.
