My dogs are my favorite Valentines. It has been a short four months since Bailey and Olivia became roommates, but if you saw them you would think they have been together since puppyhood. Their bond is stronger than any of my previous dogs. They genuinely like each other.
The funny thing is Olivia was not my first choice to be Bailey’s new roomie. She’s small, even for a Beagle, and kind of pudgy. I didn’t think she could keep up with Bailey’s energetic personality. But lucky for Bailey and me, adding Olivia to our family has turned out to be the best decision ever. Life in my home is so joyful, I wish I could freeze time.
Because I don’t want to forget this time in our lives, I decided to list the reasons why my dogs are my favorite Valentines.
Appreciate the moment – Bailey and Olivia aren’t worried about the future; they live in the present. When they chase each other in the backyard or wrestle in my living room they don’t have a care in the world. It is sheer joy to watch them appreciate the moment.
Easy to please – My dogs live for two simple pleasures: going for a walk and devouring a treat. It doesn’t matter if they’ve had a good day or a bad one, I can brighten their mood with a short walk or a tasty treat. Bailey and Olivia are easy to please.
Cuddle time – The girls are my favorite Valentines because of cuddle time. Olivia curls up next to me all night and Bailey falls into place at the bottom of the bed. Then they reach out with a paw to touch each other.
Therapy dog – Olivia is a natural therapy dog. Last Thanksgiving, we lost a family member so the dogs drove with us to another city to be with relatives. Olivia walked in the house and instinctively jumped into my mother-in-law’s lap. She comforted her all weekend.
Babysitter – Bailey is becoming my favorite babysitter. She welcomes toddlers with a big kiss and then follows them around to protect their unsteady footsteps. She sits by their side while towers of blocks are being built and she remains patient while a preschooler learns how to give a gentle pat on her head.
These are only a handful of the reasons why my dogs are my favorite Valentines. Who makes your list?
Bailey, Olivia and I wish everyone a very Happy 2017 Valentine’s Day.
