We had a phenomenal response from readers who entered our Airlift One support harness giveaway. And due to the great response, we had an unexpected turn of events. The stories pet owners posted about their paralyzed dogs, tore at the heartstrings of Walkabout Harnesses founder, Cathy Erwin. So halfway through the giveaway Cathy decided to award an Airlift One to three lucky dogs, instead of one.
I can’t thank Walkabout Harnesses enough for giving disabled dogs the gift of mobility. The Airlift One is the state-of-the-art harness and now three pups will be using it every day.
Meet the 3 winners
Sarah P. and Jamie are our first giveaway winners. Sarah rescued Jamie in January during an extreme cold spell in North Central, Florida. The dog had been dragging herself around in an isolated area. She was underweight, suffered from mange and had a secondary skin infection. X-rays showed that Jamie’s hind end was paralyzed was due to being shot in the spine. Jamie is now a happy girl with Sarah and the 8 other special needs rescue dogs in the family.
Alicia S. wrote to say that her handsome 6-year-old Miniature Schnauzer, Buddy, was given to her as a support animal by a rescue group that provided support dogs to military veterans. The pair have taken care of each other for the past 5 years. Not long ago, Buddy became paralyzed due to an injury at a day care. Alicia has been using a towel to support Buddy’s hind end when he needs to move around the house. The Airlift One will make the job much easier. Alicia’s goal is to use the harness so that she can get Buddy out in the fresh air every day.
Ellen P. recently adopted Patches. The Border collie had been abandoned at a municipal shelter, but then found his way to a rescue group that takes in dogs with special needs. While at the rescue group, Patches was diagnosed with the progressive disease, Degenerative Myelopathy. She followed him via the rescue website, but no one came to adopt him because of his diagnosis. Ellen decided she couldn’t let Patches languish at the rescue so she adopted the 12-year-old dog.
Patches’ hind legs buckle and are extremely weak. Ellen will use the Airlift One to keep her sweet boy mobile as his health declines.
