Congratulations to the winners of our Dog Wheelchair Halloween Costume Contest 2019! Each lucky pup will each receive stylish apparel from our sponsor Mozzie Pants™ for dogs.
Before I announce the names of the winners, I want to thank everyone who entered the contest. Your creativity in decorating your dogs’ wheelchairs was absolutely amazing. You’re a remarkable group of people who turn tragedy into fun.
One pet parent on our Facebook page wrote this after scrolling through your designs, “I can’t stand all the cuteness of these babies.” I completely agree.
Drumroll please! The winners of the contest are Popeye and Wallaby.
Little Popeye is our first-place winner. His pet mom Nikole D. built an aviator costume that turned this dachshund into a pilot sitting in his airplane.
Nikole adopted Popeye this summer after he spent eight months in foster care. No one had shown interest in adopting this special-needs dog until Nikole entered the picture.
Popeye has been paralyzed since October 2018 when he tried to jump onto his previous owners’ couch and fell to the ground. He suffered four herniated discs that pinched his spinal cord. He underwent surgery to repair his spine, but unfortunately it failed.
Today, Popeye goes for laser therapy, hydrotherapy and physical therapy. It’s made a huge difference in his ability to wag his tail and regain some feeling in his rear legs. Nikole hopes he’ll be able to stand or walk on his own someday.
Adorable Wallaby received the second-place award for her costume as a NASCAR racer. She and pet mom Christine G. have been taking part in our annual Halloween contest since 2017.
Chrissy’s been an important member of the Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog Facebook page since adopting Wallaby from the city shelter. She regularly posts updates about life with Wallaby and baby brother Jack, who’s also in a wheelchair. In addition, Chrissy alerts our community about wheelchair dogs who are ready for adoption.
When I first met Wallaby, she walked in the most unusual way. It looked like she was doing a handstand with her hind legs pointed straight in the air. There were no carts at the shelter so she taught herself to walk this way to protect her legs from dragging. She’s a smart little dog.
Today Chrissy, Wallaby and Jack share a wonderful and active life as a family that includes hiking and lots of adventures.
