I am a huge fan of GingerLead® Dog Support and Rehabilitation Harnesses for paraplegic dogs and pups with hind end weakness. If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know that I like GingerLead® so much I named them as one of My 5 Favorite Harnesses for Handicapped Dogs 2016.
Specialized harnesses and slings are an essential tool for pet parents with a paralyzed dog. They take the strain off your back when you transfer your dog from room to room, help them in and out of a car and assist them climbing up and down a flight of stairs. A good quality harness or sling is literally a lifesaver.
Because of my appreciation for their product, you can imagine how excited I was when GingerLead offered to sponsor a Giveaway for one lucky reader of Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog.
The company is generously awarding one of their Premium Padded Slings with a Leash in any size and gender.
What types of dogs need a sling?
The GingerLead sling/harness is used by dogs with all sorts of medical conditions:
- Hind end weakness
- Balance problems
- Degenerative Myelopathy
- Hip dysplasia
- Recovering from spine surgery or CCL (cruciate ligament) surgery
The GingerLead story
The company is named after a Golden retriever named Ginger who was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia when she was 6 months-old. Ginger underwent a triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO) on her right hip and her family was given a sling to help her move about during recovery.
The sling didn’t give adequate support for the dog when she was feeling better and tried to play and it didn’t give her owners a good way to control her movement. They were afraid Ginger might injure the repair to her knee so they developed a harness that attached to her collar and leash. The product started a whole line of slings.
And, if you’re wondering what happened to Ginger the Golden retriever; well she lived to be an old girl who passed away in 2015.
