One of my greatest joys is taking the dogs with me to run errands. Bailey and Olivia are in the car practically every day. And before they came into my life, I took Sophie with me whenever I could. Being in the car gave a paralyzed dog like Sophie a sense of freedom and normalcy. She would lay down on her belly in the cargo area of my SUV and watch the world drive past her. Nobody knew she couldn’t walk when they saw her in the car. All they knew is that a friendly dog was happy to flirt with them at the traffic light.
My experience how to keep an incontinent dog from soiling the car
While Sophie loved being in the car, I worried about protecting my vehicle from any incontinent mishaps she had. Sophie’s incontinence was more about stray poop rather than accidently peeing so she didn’t wear a diaper very often.
My concern was about my car and how to find the perfect seat cover to protect the interior.
I went through lots of seat covers during the 5 years Sophie was paralyzed. Most of them were standard sizes that fit a typical seat or cargo area of an SUV. My car was shaped like an SUV, but was actually pretty small in size. That made the covers too big or too small for my car. They didn’t fit well and shifted around as I drove. Most of the time Sophie had scooted off the cover when she had an accident.
We resorted to lots and lots of towels and baby wipes.
My favorite dog seat cover
A couple of years ago I met Jim and Maggie who own 4Knines Seat Covers at a BlogPaws pet blogging conference. I shared my disappointment with them about dog seat covers and they told me that was the exact reason they started their company. Their goal was to make a durable, comfortable, slide-proof and waterproof cover that keeps incontinent and active dogs from soiling the car.
I ordered a cargo cover to personally test it out. I found one on the 4Knines website that fit the make and model of my small SUV. It even came in colors that matched my interior.
Two years later, my dogs are still using the same cargo cover. And unless it is in the washer, the cover is always in the back of my SUV, looking like new.
A picture is worth a 1,000 words
They say a picture is worth a1,000 words so here is a photo of our 4Knines SUV cargo cover. It fits perfectly in the bed of my vehicle. There are no gaps where food or fur can land and if one of the dogs has an accident, the liquid just beads up on the waterproof material. It even protects your car from drool. The padded design is comfy and I love how the non-skid rubber backing keeps the cover in place no matter how much Bailey and Olivia move around.
