The theme this year is Enjoying A Wheelie Good Life!
National Walk ‘N Roll Dog Day was founded by award winning author and advocate for dogs with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) Barbara Techel in memory of her beloved Dachshund, Frankie. An accidental fall left Frankie paralyzed and diagnosed with IVDD, a condition where the material inside the spinal discs dries and hardens prematurely. The problem causes bulging and herniated discs that are painful and can lead to paralysis. Dachshunds are one of the breeds prone to the condition.
As Frankie’s caretaker, Barbara learned to appreciate how dogs in wheelchairs can have happy lives. She realized it is okay to be different.
With that in mind, Barbara wrote two award winning children’s books with Frankie as the main character. Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog and Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog became huge hits with kids who were suffering from long term illnesses or having other difficulties in their lives. Barbara and Frankie visited hundreds of children in schools and hospitals.
Mark your calendar for September 22 so you can take part in National Walk ‘N Roll Dog Day 2015. There will be a variety of sponsored events for dogs in carts. Also stay tuned for the new “Enjoying A Wheelie Good Life” t-shirt which will be released sometime mid-end of August. Proceeds from the t-shirt support Frankie’s Wheelchair Fund.
