One of the best parts of being a pet blogger is that I get to work behind the scenes with incredible rescue groups when they are trying to save the life of an abandoned dog or cat with special needs. In July 2014, Heath’s Haven Dog Rescue in Idaho was working hard to find a way to transport a sweet dog named Angel who was found dragging herself through the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Angel had a broken back that left her hind legs paralyzed. She had been dragging her body for so long the sores on her legs were worn to the bone.
Heath’s Haven contacted Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog to see if our readers might be able to help with supplies that Angel needed during her long transport from Tijuana to Idaho. People generously donated a crate, an orthopedic bed, toys and blankets. They also contributed to Angel’s medical care, rehab and a wheelchair. Pretty amazing….right?
Sometime after her transformation, I lost track of Angel’s progress.
Last week, an email from Luana Anderson Averill filled in the gaps. You see, Luana and her husband adopted Angel and they asked me to let you know how well she is doing today.
In 2014 Luana lost her two older dogs, Maximus and Buddy Lee. Maximus had been adopted when he was 6 weeks old and had a long life with the Averill’s, but Buddy had only been part of the family for one year before he passed away from heart failure. His death was devastating for Luana.
“I didn’t get enough time with Buddy and it was hard to let him go. He was a tall, skinny and clumsy five year-old with a gimpy hind foot who loved to talk,” said Luana. “He was too young and I didn’t get to spoil and love him enough. It was a shock when he came down sick. I had a hard time dealing with my boys dying and I cried every day.”
“I knew about Angel and I would check every few weeks to see if she had been adopted. I couldn’t stand the depression so I decided to foster her. I needed to be needed. Angel needed me and I needed her.”
Angel came to live with Luana’s family on December 29, 2014 as a foster pup and I’m happy to share the news that she was officially adopted by the Averill’s on September 1, 2015. Luana, her husband and Bay’lee their 9 year-old Border collie mix fell in love with Angel the first day she arrived at their home. Her recent adoption was strictly a technicality!
Angel and Bay’lee keep Luana busy and happy. The three of them play in a nearby park every day.
“She is spoiled rotten and just loves life,” said Luana. “She has a weird fascination with cats, loves pine cones and hates having her picture taken.”
Angel will not gain back the use of her legs, but that is the only thing missing in her life because she has a permanent family to love and protect her. Luana, thank you so much for sharing your story and letting us know how well Angel is doing.
