Do you know about the Balance IT website? It was developed by veterinarians from the University of California, Davis and it’s an absolute Godsend for those of us who prepare homemade food for our dogs and cats. I was introduced to the site by the veterinary specialist who takes care of Cody’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The website made me so hopeful that we will be able to turn Cody’s problem around that I wanted to share it with you.
What is Balance IT?
Balance IT was founded by Sean Delaney, DVM, MS, DACVN who is the former Board Chair of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. Dr. Delaney and his team of board certified veterinary nutritionists (a group of people I didn’t know existed) developed Balance IT with the sole purpose of helping veterinarians give the best nutritional information to pet owners who are preparing homemade food for their dogs and cats with chronic diseases.
They did this with the creation of a software program called the Autobalancer® that separates the proteins, fruits, veggies, carbohydrates and fats pet parents are using for their pets’ meals.
Veterinarians and pet owners simply type in the current diet they are cooking and the website analyzes it for the nutritional and caloric value. Then the program gives you suggestions to balance it so the diet provides your pet with the complete nutrition they need. It might recommend a second protein, or the addition of a grain or beans and even an additional healthy fat. The Autobalancer even has a section that helps pet parents balance the diet of their healthy dogs who are eating home cooked meals.
At first I found the website a little challenging to maneuver, but Balance IT offers a series of instructional videos that helped me through. There are also several nutritional videos by veterinary experts who demonstrate proper cooking techniques and suggestions for healthy homemade recipes. If you like cooking for your pets, but need more information about the best ingredients to add to keep them healthy I hope you’ll tap into the expertise available at Balance IT.
Balance IT Supplements
In addition to recipes and nutrition, Balance IT offers supplements that can be mixed in with your pet’s food. This is especially beneficial for dogs with chronic health problems, like Cody who need more nutrients than what can be provided by food alone. There are three different formulas of supplements and each contains a variety of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. This was one of the primary reasons our veterinarian directed us to the site. We have been using Balance IT Canine.
To give you a better example of the invaluable information on the website here is a video from the founder.
Do you cook a homemade diet for your dogs? What do you do to ensure they are getting all of the nutrients they need?
