Hoops is a very unusual name for a tiny 4 1/2lb. Chihuahua, but her foster mom Jennifer Terrana thought it was perfect for a dog that can only walk in circles. Somewhere in her past, Hoops suffered a blow to the head that left her with neurological damage and unable to hear. The little dog was rescued from the city animal shelter in my hometown, Las Vegas, NV.
The idea of fostering a dog that is deaf and only able to walk in circles might have seemed intimidating to some animal lovers, but Jennifer didn’t hesitate for a minute when she and the other volunteers at A Home 4 Spot saw Hoops at the shelter. Jennifer has been a foster mom to more than 100 dogs, including many with special needs.
Even with all of Jennifer’s experience, little Hoops sat in her crate 24 hours a day for the first month at her foster home. Then slowly with encouragement from Jennifer, Hoops started to find her way. Now she is Jennifer’s little buddy who loves to cuddle when Jennifer isn’t at school teaching.
Jennifer thinks this little special needs Chihuahua is ready for a family of her own. She’s confident she will be able to place Hoops with people who will love her forever. Jennifer has already found homes for special needs dogs like Henry, a 10 year-old dachshund with Cushing’s disease and a three-legged dachshund named Bear. Hoops has a long life ahead of her and she deserves a loving home.
